Don't Be Team Amber

When it comes to deciding my least favourite contestant on Love Island, there's a lot of tough competition. There's Olivia, the kind of girl that would smack you in the face with a bin lid during a fight over chicken nuggets, or Jonny, who can be a kind-at-first-yet-actually-scummy piece of work yet still have everything work in his favour, or there's Craig, who has a tattoo of gallows on his arm and is clearly only flirting with Camilla for money and popularity, and let's not forget Gabby, that annoying friend in a relationship trying to set up all the other singletons because she 'just wants them to be as happy as her'. But after 24 episodes of Love Island - yes, that's right, this has basically been consuming my life for a month - I can confirm that my least favourite islander is Amber.

Amber is that girl we all hated in school; vapid, vain and a huge attention-seeker, who can dish out the nastiness but not take it. All series she's had her saga - or 'journey', as she likes to call it, as if she's been hiking through the Himalayas rather than sitting around in a bikini on a free holiday - with Kem, my second favourite islander (obviously number one is Marcel). They've had a dramatic relationship so far; they've been lemon-picking, he's smugly revealed her biggest turn-on is nipple kissing, and he's even given her a pink infinity bracelet to match his blue one. So why has it all gone wrong?

Well, I think it's her doing. She's been a nasty little so-and-so towards Kem from the off, in my opinion. The first red flag was when she flat-out lied, saying Chris told her he'd 'always be there for her' to make it sound like he was coming on to her, which he never said (the producers would have known that would be juicy enough to air); when Chris naturally got upset about being lied about, she called him a drama queen. A drama queen. Rather rich of the girl who cried over getting hit with a pillow to call someone a 'drama queen', but there you go.

Lying is a habit of hers actually, and it was so satisfying during the 'Licence To Swill' challenge when her bitching and lying got called up in front of everyone. She really lived to discuss Dom, it turned out. "If [Dom and Jess] liked each other in the way they said they did, he would have walked", she bitched. True, but savage. She also stated, "Dom and I have a sexual connection," but when she got called out for this she said the comment was "taken out of context". You cannot take a comment with the word 'sexual' in it out of context, Amber. THAT'S THE CONTEXT.

Just look at her smug little face. Ugh.

And let's not forget her claiming every single guy that has come into the villa has been 'her type on paper'. And what does this do for poor Kem? It knocks his confidence and makes him jealous and suspicious of the other boys. Yeah, way to establish a stable relationship, Amber. Sure, she's been 'loyal' in the sense that she never kissed another guy, but flirting with other guys and giggling to Mike about how much she fancies him isn't loyalty to me. If you're reading this and you have a partner that's constantly flirting with other people, get them gone! You can do better.

Now I'm no psychologist, but she seems like a textbook narcissist to me. When the attention isn't on her, she seems to get bored and annoyed. I'm guessing she does the whole 'I fancy this guy' spiel not only to make Kem try harder to be with her, but also to bend him to her will and shape his behaviour. Let's not forget her claiming that she basically trained him to be the right guy for her, as if compatibility isn't an important aspect of a relationship, and she said she 'put up with him' just for really being himself. And disclaimer; Kem is no saint. He's annoying and immature, but he's harmless, really. Or is he?

Kem has obviously 'cheated' (is it even cheating when you're broken up?) on Amber in recent episodes by kissing Chyna/China (I am not invested enough to learn how to spell her name). In a brilliant move by the producers, a photo of this was sent to Amber, so she could learn about it. So. Funny. This brought Amber to crocodile tears, wailing about how considerate she's been of his feelings, unlike him. Yes, it was so considerate of her to put her pants in his luggage as a 'reminder' of her, no doubt to ward off the other girls, because God forbid Kem fancies someone other than Amber. Honestly, textbook narcissist. It's not like she sent him granny pants, either; she sent him little lacy things that no doubt she thinks she looks a supermodel wearing. Ugh.

My personal highlight of last night's episode was Camilla saying Amber had been 'amazing' to Kem, in response to poor Amber playing the victim over Kem - WHO WASN'T WITH AMBER - moving on. I get that it's not very feminist to bash on other women, Camilla, but when has Amber been 'amazing'? Was it when she was telling Simon she was sure he'd have coupled up with her, or was it when she looked disappointed that he didn't? Hmmmm.

You may be thinking that she's a truly despicable person with no redeeming features. Well, fear not; she's a philosopher.

"With every cloud there's a silver lining."
She got what was coming to her, though, because instead of Kem choosing to recouple with her, thus instantly getting exiled from the villa, he recoupled himself, leaving her angrier than I've ever seen anyone as he strutted in with the girl he'd kissed on his arm. Just brilliant.

But whether you loathe her like I seem to, or you feel sorry for her because it can't be easy to have a boyfriend like Kem, or if you literally couldn't care less because it's a 'reality' show that's heavily manipulated by editors and producers, you cannot deny that Amber brings the drama. Can't wait for the upcoming episodes.
